Halton Hills whistleblower policy development is now underway following Council approval of a new motion. This marks an important step toward strengthening transparency, accountability, and public trust in our community.
I am pleased to share that Council has approved my motion to begin this work and move forward with developing a formal whistleblower policy for the Town of Halton Hills.
Why This Matters
This initiative is about ensuring that our systems support openness, integrity, and accountability.
A whistleblower policy provides employees, contractors, and members of the public with a clear, confidential, and protected way to report concerns, including:
- Misconduct
- Financial irregularities
- Ethical breaches
Just as importantly, it helps ensure that individuals can come forward without fear of reprisal.
What Happens Next
With Council’s support, Town staff will now begin the next phase of this work.
Research Phase
Staff will review how whistleblower programs operate in other municipalities to identify best practices and effective models.
Policy Alignment
Any proposed policy will be designed to align with the Town’s existing Code of Conduct and all applicable legal requirements.
Timeline
A comprehensive report is expected to come back to Council by July 13, 2026. This report will outline recommended next steps, including implementation considerations and associated costs.
Looking Ahead
As Halton Hills continues to grow, it is important that we have strong systems in place to prevent wrongdoing and protect the integrity of our municipal operations.
This is an important first step, and I look forward to reviewing the recommendations as they come forward.
As always, your thoughts and feedback are welcome.
