Halton Hills Council has endorsed an expanded two-dome concept for the proposed Eighth Line park expansion beside the Gellert Community Centre.
The project is intended to transform the surrounding park lands into a multi-use sports and recreation hub, providing more indoor space for local organizations and athletes. Community groups representing sports such as pickleball, tennis, badminton, volleyball, soccer and football have identified a growing need for additional year-round facilities in Halton Hills.
The original proposal focused primarily on a single indoor hard-court facility. During the council meeting, representatives from the Halton Hills Sports Coalition encouraged council to consider a phased two-dome plan. Under the expanded concept, one dome would support hard-court and gym activities, while a second dome would cover the existing soccer field with new turf.
Councillor Jason Brass introduced an amendment directing Town staff to include the two-dome option in the municipality’s Expression of Interest to the federal Building Communities Strong Fund.
“Opportunity is knocking here and the federal government seems to be willing to dole out some dollars,” Jason said during the meeting. “I would hate to lose that opportunity for either a one-dome or a two-dome solution.”
Jason also requested that a special council meeting be scheduled in advance so council can quickly review funding options and partnership arrangements if the federal government expresses interest in the proposal.
The Halton Hills Pickleball Association has pledged $250,000 toward the expansion, demonstrating strong community support and a willingness to help reduce the financial burden on local taxpayers.
Submitting an Expression of Interest does not commit the Town to proceeding with the project. It keeps Halton Hills eligible for potential federal funding while allowing council and staff to further evaluate the costs, partnerships and benefits of the expanded plan.
Town staff will now revise the proposal to reflect the two-dome concept and updated project costs. If the federal government responds positively, council will meet to review the financial plan and determine the next steps toward a formal application.
Jason believes Halton Hills should continue pursuing funding opportunities that expand local recreation options while protecting taxpayers and supporting the long-term needs of the community.
