During the July 13th council meeting, Councillor Jason Brass raised concerns about the process surrounding proposed Official Plan amendments for the Georgetown GO Station and Mill Street Corridor.
The amendments would guide future development around the Georgetown GO Station and establish updated planning policies for the surrounding Mill Street corridor. While council approved the Georgetown GO Protected Major Transit Station Area amendment, the Mill Street Corridor Secondary Plan was referred back to Town staff for further review by the next council.
Jason supported delaying the decision after concerns were raised about whether affected property owners and community members had been adequately informed and consulted. He noted that approving the amendment at the final meeting of the council term could limit the incoming council’s ability to review new information and address outstanding concerns.
The motion to refer the Mill Street Corridor plan back to staff passed by a vote of 7–3.
Jason believes major planning decisions should be made through an open and transparent process that gives residents, property owners and the incoming council an opportunity to fully understand the potential impact on the community.
